  National Nature Reserves (NNRs)
National Nature Reserves are places where wildlife comes first. They were established to protect the most important areas of wildlife habitat and geological formations in Britain, and as places for scientific research. Use our interactive map to find out about the NNRs in your area.

Local Nature Reserves (LNRs)
Local Nature Reserves are for both people and wildlife. They are places with wildlife or geological features that are of special interest locally, which give local people special opportunities to study and learn about them or simply enjoy and have contact with nature.

Greenspace
Greenspaces within towns are vital for providing people regular contact with wildlife, especially for those without a garden at home.

Special Areas of Conservation (SACs)
SACs are areas which have been given special protection under the European Union's Habitats Directive. They provide increased protection to a variety of wild animals, plants and habitats and are a vital part of global efforts to conserve the world's biodiversity. England's SACs include areas which cover marine as well as terrestrial areas.

Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs)
Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) represent our best sites for wildlife and geology. Well over half, by area, are internationally important and many play an important part in local culture and economies or provide wonderful opportunities for people to enjoy wildlife and landscape.

Understanding the Undercliffs
2005 is the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs National Nature Reserve. This truly spectacular nature reserve spans seven miles of some of the most unspoilt coastline in England. A range of events are being organised this spring and summer by English Nature reserve staff and voluntary wardens.

LIFE Projects
The LIFE Programme is a European Community initiative which provides funding to encourage sustainable development and assist in the implementation of the European Commission's environmental policies. This index page provides links to the websites of projects which all have part-funding from the LIFE-Nature fund.

Walks & Events
To help visitors understand national nature reserves and enjoy them better we are inviting the public to take part in a range of walks and events on NNRs.

Geological Conservation
The geology of England is spectacular, diverse and of great importance in the historical and continued development of geological science.

England's Geology
This section describes England’s geology county by county. The descriptions are simple and aim to give a sense of local geology and geological history, some of the geological highlights and suggestions of places to visit.
