50th anniversary events 2005

A range of events were organised last spring and summer by English Nature staff and voluntary wardens. English Nature were helped with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and a good working partnership with the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site Team and Trust, East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Team and East Devon District Council Countryside Service.

Boat trips

Enjoying one of the boat trips / Albert Knott, English NatureAs part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations English Nature ran a series of boat trips for visitors to experience the Undercliffs at a leisurely pace. Stuart Line Cruises sailed from Seaton beach to Lyme Regis, with passengers being treated to a full commentary explaining the geology, flora and fauna.

Children from local schools in Seaton, Colyton and Beer were also given a fantastic opportunity to journey to the Undercliffs by boat. The trips allowed the schools to disembark onto the beach below the Undercliffs where they were told stories, played games and learnt about the National Nature Reserve. One result of these boat trips is that some of the pictures the children created have been put on a new World Heritage Site gateway town interpretive panel.

Improvements along the South West Coastal Path

Clearings have been created to help dry up the worst sections of the footpath and Westcliff cottage, within the Undercliff / Albert Knott, English Naturegive some much needed views of the sea and surrounding landscape. This section of path is mainly through jungle-like woodland with patches of rough and muddy ground, with steps in places. There is no access to the road or beach from this path.

For a leaflet giving more information about the NNR click here (pdf 2.48 MB).

Some of the clearings have revealed buildings which are part of the site's history. The purpose of some of these buildings is explained in the new interpretation boards. For safety reasons please view the ruins from a distance.

For anyone wanting to know more, there is a new World Heritage Site book Exploring the Undercliffswritten by Donald Campbell. This is available at local book shops or from Coastal Distribution.
