The Data Protection Act and the information we collect |

via this website except where you are invited to complete a form to request a service.

you send to us of your own choice. Under the Data Protection Act 1998 we have a duty
to protect any information we collect from you. Information you provide to us (eg
contact details) within an e-mail or form will only be used by us for the purpose for

unless obliged to do so by any statute, regulation or other legally binding authority
including but not limited to a government request. In some circumstances however we may
need to disclose your personal details to a third party so that they can provide a
service you have requested, or fulfil a request for information. Any information about
you that we pass to a third party will be held securely by that party, in accordance
with the Data Protection Act 1998, and used only to provide the services or information
you have requested. If you wish to place any restrictions on the use of information,
which you may supply to us, you should detail such restrictions within an e-mail to
English Nature. From time to time we may wish to provide you with details of
other services or literature about conservation or environmental matters available from
English Nature which may be of interest to you. We may also offer you the opportunity to
participate in the consultation process for new methods, strategies, works or schemes
proposed by English Nature. We may collect information to provide statistics for
the purpose of monitoring website usage in order to help us develop this website and
our services. These statistics will not contain information which can be used to
identify individuals.

1 Ordering publications |
When you order a publication, we need to know
your name, e-mail address, delivery address, credit or debit
card number and the card's expiry date. This allows us to
process and fulfil your orders and to notify you of the status
of your order. We also ask for your telephone number which
enables us to contact you urgently if there is a problem with
your order.
This information will be passed to our distribution
agents, who will process and fulfil your order. This information
is stored on our customer database for statistical monitoring

3 Downloading GIS data online |
The registration information we collect is:
your full name, your organisation and your email address.
This information is stored on our web server. This information
is stored so that you do not need to re-register when you
come back to the site. This information is also stored on
back-up tapes to avoid loss of data.
Our Geographic Information Unit also keeps a record of your
registration information for statistical monitoring. |

4 Feedback |
You can send us your feedback by completing
a variety of feedback forms online. Completing these feedback
forms will automatically generate an email directed to the
appropriate person, for example our Enquiry Service or the
Website Manager. If this feedback form is asking for information,
we may need to contact other government departments to find
that information. If your question is technical, we may need
to pass it to our technology suppliers. Once we have replied to you, we keep a record of your emails
for six months for reference and audit purposes, after which
it is deleted.

5 Applying for a job online |
When you apply for a job online you will have
to provide us with detailed personal information. Our Human
Resources Services Team will retain your application form and
other papers for at least six months to enable us to deal with
enquiries about your application, after which time they will
be destroyed. If you are not selected for the post but are a
reserve candidate our Human Resources Services Team will hold
your documents for a 12 month period in case a suitable alternative
vacancy arising during that period. |

6 Site usage information |
Log files allow us to record visitors' use of the site. In order to
continuously improve our website, English Nature collates log file
information from all our visitors, which we use to make changes to the layout
of the site and to the information in it, based on the way that visitors move
around it. Log files do not contain any personal information. |

Persistant cookies |
One way we collect information about you when you use our
websites is through the use of cookies. A "cookie"
is a set of data that a website server stores on your computer.

applications and information, to prevent unauthorised access and to ensure you view
only information that relates to you. For Land Purchase Grants, we allow you to give
other access to your application. English Nature does not take responsibility for any
consequences of this.

You must register to download images from our
image library. The registration information we collect is: your
