We provide personal accident and death insurance cover for all registered volunteers whilst they are carrying out their voluntary role. The policy covers only personal accident and accidental death, whilst undertaking or related to, volunteering duties for English Nature � it does not cover death from an existing illness or disease, death from natural causes or the loss or damage of an individual�s personal property.

A person must be at least 15 years old (the day of the 15th birthday) before we can offer them a voluntary placement.

The insurance policy covers volunteers up to a maximum age of 89 years old (up until the day of an individuals 90th birthday). There are two scales of insurance provision depending on age with a reduced provision for volunteers aged between 81 and 90. Volunteers will be informed in writing of any changes in their insurance cover as they approach their 81st birthday.

Third party liability for injury or damage to third party property is not included within the volunteer insurance policy. Third party incidents are dealt with on a case-by-case basis in much the same way as for paid members of English Nature staff. This means that provided volunteers have not behaved negligently, have acted in good faith and followed all guidelines or instructions provided by an authorised person, the organisation will endeavour to support them throughout any reasonable third party claim. Incidents or accidents involving third parties, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, must be reported to English Nature as soon as possible.
