Corporate Governance Manual

Introduction

Ashness Bridge with Skiddaw behind, Lake District/ Paul Glendell, English NatureCorporate governance is defined as the systems and frameworks by which organisations are directed and controlled. It is concerned with decision-making at the heart of, and at the highest levels of, an organisation. Good corporate governance, and the guidance that comes with it, provides an organisation with clear accountabilities.

Individual officers have the confidence to carry out their jobs efficiently and know what standards are expected of them. This leads to increased confidence and respect for our work by both Government and the public.

However, behind the formal systems of corporate governance lie the core values of an organisation. English Nature aims to enrich England's wildlife and natural features.

Our core values are:
to be a champion for nature conservation and natural features
to be firm but fair regulators
to support our work with sound science and rigorous analysis
to be outcome orientated
to be open
to be innovative
to be connected to the real world

The manual is English Nature's primary source of guidance on corporate governance, including the legislation under which we operate; the roles and responsibilities of Council Members; the rules governing Council meetings; as well as clarifying the accountabilities of Council Members, Directors and senior staff.
