The Herbicide Handbook was published by English Nature, in association with FACT (The Forum for the Application of Conservation Techniques). The Handbook encourages readers to weigh use of herbicide against other possible techniques in tackling the control of unwanted vegetation. It reviews non-chemical methods of control of problem plants, legal and safety legislation affecting herbicides and includes sections on which herbicides have approvals for use on named weeds and habitats. Managers are helped to assess the environmental impact of using herbicides by profiles of 26 herbicides in common use; these provide not only resistance and susceptibility information of problem plants but also full assessments of their environmental effects on soil, water, animals, insects and aquatic wildlife. Although the Herbicide Handbook is out of print it can be obtained by buying the Scrub Handbook (30 post free), where it appears in full at the back.
